The Arts Center of Saint Peter is the final stop for the Wood Engravers’ Network Third Triennial, a traveling juried exhibition featuring sixty-four (64) engravings by thirty-seven (37) artists from the United States, Canada, Ireland and Belgium, on display at the Arts Center November 8 – December 29, 2019.
Wood engraving is a relief printmaking process where an original drawing is cut into the surface of an end-grain wood block and then inked and printed to create a reflected image of the cut block. The prints are considered multiple originals created in limited editions — not reproductions or digital creations — offering an affordable entry into collecting original art works.
Among the artists is Joel Moline of St. Peter.
The Wood Engravers’ Network formed in 1994 to foster education and create a resource for wood engravers and the practice of wood engraving. The group publishes a biannual journal, holds an annual conference, maintains a website and social media presence, as well as sponsoring exhibits, group projects and an ongoing print exchange for members.
The public is invited to the opening reception for the exhibition on Saturday, November 9, from 5:00-7:00 p.m.
The Arts Center’s galleries are free, wheelchair-accessible. Summer gallery hours are Wednesday though Friday 1-5 p.m., Saturday 10 a.m. – 5 p.m., and Sunday 1-5 p.m.

Watercolors in the Hillstrom Museum of Art features around 40 watercolors from the Museum’s permanent collection. These range in date from about 1850 to 2007 and include many donations from Museum namesake Richard L. Hillstrom, as well as works from other sources such as the Dorothy Dehner Foundation for the Visual Arts in New York, which earlier this year donated a 1934 watercolor by American modernist painter and sculptor Dorothy Dehner (1901-1994). Other artists represented in the exhibit include Alexander Calder (1898-1976), Wanda Gág (1894-1946), John Marin (1870-1953), and Reginald Marsh (1898-1954).
The landscapes, seascapes, still lifes, and figurative paintings on display are accompanied by a text, titled “Joy of Watercolor,” that considers the watercolor medium and that was contributed by Betsy Byers, Professor in the College’s Department of Art and History. Byers, who joined the Gustavus faculty in 2011 and currently serves as chair of the department, works in watercolor and has taught it through her numerous painting classes for the College.

Eloquent Objects features African artworks recently bequeathed to the College from the estate of Ruth and Raymond Reister. Ruth Reister served on the College’s Board of Trustees from 1994 to 2003 and was its chair from 2000 to 2002. She and her husband Raymond were avid collectors of African art.
The exhibition texts for Eloquent Objects, which will also be included in the fully-illustrated brochure accompanies the exhibit, were written by African art specialist Martha G. Anderson. Anderson has published extensively on African art and conducted extensive field research in Africa. She recently retired after over 30 years teaching art history at Alfred University in upstate New York. Anderson has a long relationship with Gustavus Adolphus College where her father, H. Milton Anderson, taught in the Department of Mathematics for over 30 years.

During this introduction to encaustic painting, participants will paint with molten wax on a warm wood panel, fusing each layer with a heat gun. To release ourselves from the paralyzing effects of self-criticism, we’ll tap into our creative intuition using playful exploration in a fun, supportive environment!
After practicing the basics, we’ll explore techniques for altering the wax surface. Watercolors, oil pastels, charcoal, stencils, metal, artifacts (like pressed leaves, paper, feathers, and thread) and other media will be available for experimentation; and an assortment of tools and supplies. The small class size allows for more individualized instruction.
Note: Encaustic painting involves safety hazards including heat, fumes, and sharp tools. We’ll meet in a well-ventilated room; student safety and comfort are top priorities! Questions? Contact Deb Groebner at whiteoak22@gmail.com
