Fairmont — The Fairmont Opera House has announced the launch of its vital capital campaign, “Preserve the Legacy, Enrich the Future,” during the Fairmont Area Community Theater performances of “Mary Poppins” that began on July 23rd at the Fairmont High School Performing Arts Center. The Fairmont Opera House requires $4 million to repair, restore, and reopen the historic theater, marking the most pivotal moment in its 125-year history.
A Vital Community Landmark
For over a century, The Fairmont Opera House has been a cornerstone of the community, hosting countless performances and events that have brought people together. The building, steeped in history, has been more than just a venue; it has been a place where generations have created cherished memories. The capital campaign seeks to honor this rich legacy by preserving the theater for future generations.
The organization announced the need to repair the facility’s structure in October 2023. Jepsen Shoring of Minneapolis installed extensive temporary structural supports in December 2023 to ensure the facility’s structural security while fundraising occurs. However, repairs can only begin once appropriate funding has been received.
Fairmont Opera House Board Chair Bob Luedtke comments, “It’s the biggest challenge we’ve ever faced. The other fixes we’ve done were fairly critical but relatively easy.” The survival of The Fairmont Opera House hangs in the balance, but Bob is resolute: “It isn’t going down on my watch.”
A Dire Need for Funding
The campaign’s goal of $4 million is essential to prevent the permanent closure of The Fairmont Opera House, with funds needed by the end of 2025 for repairs and restorations. The Fairmont Opera House has been at the heart of the community for 125 years, and its closure would not just be a significant loss but a tragedy for the community.
Ned Koppen of the Fairmont Economic Development Authority highlighted The Fairmont Opera House’s economic and cultural importance: “The Fairmont Opera House attracts visitors from near and far, generating tourism revenue, supporting local businesses, and contributing to our economy. Additionally, it is crucial in preserving our cultural heritage, fostering creativity, and building a sense of community pride and identity.”
Community Engagement and Support
The first announcement was made during the well-attended opening night of Fairmont Area Community Theater’s “Mary Poppins” production, underscoring the theater’s ongoing role in providing high-quality entertainment and community engagement. “The Fairmont Opera House has affected many lives in the area through the youth and adult theater productions over the years. I have seen many young individuals thrive and grow personally through involvement in our theater programs,” says Stage Manager and Fairmont Opera House Board Member Jane Reiman.
The Fairmont Opera House has been a vital part of the community’s cultural life, offering opportunities for local talent to shine and for residents to enjoy diverse performances. Fairmont Opera House Board Member Zachary Petersen emphasized the importance of this mission: “The quality of arts and entertainment, and by extension ameliorating cultural experience and community involvement, yes, but specifically, and mostly, to educate local people about theater and many other subjects of social issue through theater.”
Looking Ahead
The “Preserve the Legacy, Enrich the Future” campaign is a call to action for the community. It invites everyone to contribute to preserving this historic venue, ensuring it remains a vibrant center for arts, culture, and community engagement within the region.
“At The Fairmont Opera House, we stand on the brink of an incredible transformation. While the urgency of our capital project is undeniable, our hearts are filled with hope and optimism,” says Fairmont Opera House Executive Director Blake Potthoff. “With your support, we will reopen our doors to a brighter, more vibrant future, ensuring this historic gem continues to inspire and unite our community for generations to come.”
