Mankato, MN – The Blue Earth County Historical Society is undertaking an asbestos abatement project at the History Center and needs the community’s financial support to complete the project.
The home of the Blue Earth County Historical Society at 424 Warren Street Mankato was built in 1960. With buildings of this age, it’s common to find asbestos was used in different ways. Such is the case for the History Center ceilings. Asbestos abatement is required before projects such as enhanced lighting in the exhibit space and multimedia improvements to the meeting rooms can be made possible. Due to the closures and restrictions with COVID-19, now is the ideal time to complete this much-needed project.
“We are looking forward to a clean and healthy History Center and are excited for long-awaited enhancements to our exhibit space and meeting rooms,” says Jessica Potter, BECHS Executive Director. “We can’t wait for the project to be completed, so we can welcome the community back in to see all of the improvements.”
While BECHS plans to utilize some designated building funds, it will take just an additional $50,000 by July 15th to complete this $150,000 project. The community is invited to join the BECHS $50,000 Building Fund campaign today to improve the health and safety of community gathering spaces for everyone who visits the History Center!

The History Center will remain closed until at least August 1 for asbestos abatement and other necessary repairs associated with the project.
