SAINT PETER, MINN. – One of the largest private contributions in the Arts Center of Saint Peter’s history, $12,000 from Mankato artisan Jennie Ward through the James and Jennie Ward Fund of the Mankato Area Foundation, is helping the Arts Center launch new programming in writing, studio, and fiber arts.
Ward, whose jewelry has long been a staple in the Arts Center’s gallery shop, approached the Arts Center last fall after learning of a revenue gap caused by the loss of a tenant and the Arts Center’s desire to occupy that space with arts education programming. “I understand the difficulties of finding solutions when situations like this arise,” says Ward. “It’s difficult if not impossible to get general operating funds. I’ve always believed in the Arts Center’s work and wanted to make sure it continues.”
Since the loss of its historic building in 1998, the Arts Center’s ample collection of table and floor looms had been in storage. Today, they occupy two new studios with natural lighting and space for more than twelve weavers at a time. A four week “Introduction to Weaving on a Table Loom” class begins Monday, February 24, 4-6 p.m., open to all levels, including beginners. A monthly drop-in art studio, monthly drop-in art critique, weekly open knitting sessions, and an array of writing classes are also offered this spring. Details and registration information is online at artscentersp.org/classes.
Since 1979, the Arts Center of Saint Peter has hosted creative performances, classes for youth and adults, exhibits and more, serving residents of Saint Peter and the surrounding region. Galleries are free and open to the public. Hours and information are at artscentersp.org.
