What is Wonkism? Wonkism was first used [in the context of the show and as a descriptor] by local Mankato artist Isaac Pfeffer about three to four years ago in describing the type of work that is created by both Sam Brown and Edson Rosas. From there, the term then expanded to “Wonkist” to describe those who are creating work under the movement of Wonkism.”You guys are just a little wonky, breaking the mold, creating your own style.” – IP
As the conversation continued, we began to deduce what the heck Wonkism is, who we are, and the work we create. We are serious but not serious, absurd, we are artists figuring out how to exist within the capital “A” art space that exists within this capitalist world. Are we mocking the high-end artists? Maybe? Are we pretending to be snobby artists? Not really but maybe in performance. Is this political? Yes, and no? The working definition of Wonkism will always be growing and evolving to include those who feel like they need a safe space to exist.
We hope this show allows those beginning to enter the art space to feel welcomed and those who are already established to feel less pressure exististing in this scene. Also, we want the audience to think about what it means to be a wonkist in the world, as a group, and inside our bodies and souls. If y’all have questions, Sam has a plethora of knowledge in relation to random things, art, and paints, and Edson is a great resource to give you some wisdom on self-care and listening to your body.
