MLK. 11.12.61: Movie Viewing & Discussion
November 13 @ 3:00 pm
Centenary will host the first in-person presentation of the film on Sunday, November 13th at 3:00 p.m. Ryan Sturgis of True Façade Pictures, along with Kessel leaders Jameel Hoque and Justin Biel will be present to introduce the film, and answer questions about the documentary afterward.
MLK. 11.12.61 is a film that uses King’s visit to Mankato to interview area residents on not only how King affected our world, but how that visit gave Mankato an inspirational start to its own path toward diversity and equality.
In 1961, Centenary Church hosted a speaker who would, shortly after, become an icon in the fight to equalize the rights of Black Americans. This visit by Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. is a cherished moment in our community’s history, but complete details around the event and the impact on the people who heard him speak have faded in the 60 years since he was here.
Through a collaboration between the Kessel Peace Institute of Minnesota State University, Mankato, and Ryan Sturgis of True Façade Pictures, these important details have been captured and preserved in an amazing 40-minute documentary.
