SEvent The Grand Center For Arts Jane Liedman Exhibit

Jane was born in St. Paul to Bertha and Henry Halvorson and graduated from Central High School in 1940. Her early art interest was nurtured by doing scrapbooks with her dad and plate painting with her mom. She had one sister, Shirley, who was also interested in art. Jane’s childhood was very happy.

After 3 and a half years of nursing study at the University of Minnesota, the love of her life, Lyle, came home from a leave from the South Pacific theater of WWII, and they gave us an extraordinary, happy New Year’s Eve memory of a wedding on December 31, 1943, at her parent’s home in St. Paul.

She embraced the role of an army wife for 24 years, savoring opportunities in San Francisco, Germany, the Maryland side of the DC Corridor, and the Governor’s Island in New York harbor, among numerous other places. She traveled in Europe and throughout the USA, especially enjoying our national parks.

The children are grateful for her love, care, and maximum sacrifices. She was a self-taught cook. Jane introduced a variety of music and art into the home and taught piano to son Jay. She was a stereotype of a real homemaker.

Upon the family’s retirement from the Army in the 1960s, Jane and Lyle lived in Ames, Iowa, for 12 years; Bella Vista, Arkansas, for 14 years; and New Ulm since the early 1990s.

Ames was where her passion to be an artist caught fire and she was introduced to theories, mediums, subjects, arrangements, and more. In Arkansas, she was president of a 600-member art group. She sold hundreds of paintings of natural and outdoor subjects and still life from all mediums at sales and under consignment. In New Ulm, she continued to paint and was an active member of the Literary Club and some exercise groups.
